Does 'bar' and 'hat' mean the same thing?
Below are the some of the symbols that represent parameters and statistics that are. XBar The sample mean. For example, for the survey that asks 100 people's.
I'm hung up how different courses notate population versus sample mean.
First Course:
Beta: population mean
Beta 'hat': sample mean
Second Course
mu: population mean
x 'bar': sample mean

I asked one professor and he said to think of 'hat' as an estimate of something and not an average.. ....but this further confuses me because the average proportion is denoted as p'hat'.
Can anyone confirm or help me understand the proper way to think of these terms?
